Reportage: Swedish Punk

I am going to write a big reportage about Swedish punk. I will write about different periods, genres and bands. I will try to interview/talk to around 25 bands. It will be 8 parts and total 26 episodes. It's not possible to write about everything, but this will be a pretty big document over the Swedish punk scene from 1977 to present.

It's not a secret of which bands I will interview, but I will wait to expose anything now. I can just tell that it will be something for everyone. And I really look forward to do this big project. If you have any suggestion that you want me to write about, just let me know. It's not sure that I will use it since all parts and episods are already written, but there is always possible that I have forget some important part.

Follow the work here: http://schizofanzine.blogspot.se/p/reportage-swedish-punk-77-to-present.html

Review: Georgia Barbershop - It's Alright, It's Okay, It Only Took Seven Years

Georgia Barbershop - It's Alright, It's Okay, It Only Took Seven Years
http://georgiabarbershop.bandcamp.com/

At last I have got what I always are looking for. A dirty sound. But why do I want it this way? Well, I get the feeling that the band is playing live with a lot's of love and lot's of strong feelings. Georgia Barbershop from Sweden has a motley garage/punkrock sound that makes me happy. I wouldn't be surprised if the members in G.B listen much to bands like Buzzcocks and New York Dolls and even if G.B not might be the best band I've heard is the feeling so strong and rock n roll feelings are never wrong. The standard of the songs are approved but hey, some of the songs are really good so there is a few ups and downs but the wholeness is more than ok. I don't use to listen to this kind of post punk 'n roll very often, but I will for sure listen more to Georgia Barbershop in the future and especially to their best tracks "Wife problems", "Quality bird" and "Underneath my couch".

Festival: Dead Rhythm #1

Dead Rhythm is a new punk festival which will be arranged in Västerås in the end of  September, Friday 27th and Saturday 28th. The line-up is fantastic with bands from all over Sweden and from all different genres... crust/street/Oi!... This is an interview with Ronny, who arrange the fest. I think they need as much PR as possible and I hope this will be a recurrent festival.

Visit Dead Rhythm on Facebook for more info

Here is the schedule.

Friday

Prins Carl (Västerås)
Saturday Heroes (Finspång)
Damage Head (Sthlm/Uppsala)
Fredag den 13;e (Göteborg)
Gatans Lag (Borås)

Saturday

Dobermann Cult (Stockholm)
Dissekerad (Stockholm)
Agent Attitude (Uppsala)
Utanförskapet (Dalarna)
Hyrda Knektar (Stockholm)
Knife For An Eye (Göteborg)

1. Hey Ronny, please tell me about Dead Rythm. How did you came up with the idea for this fest? It is a really good line-up, and a fantastic genre mix. What was your intention when you start to book bands?

Hey and thanks for this interview!

I had the idea for a while, because I'm so tired of leaving town every week to go to gigs, With this fest I will have the chance to watch great music in my hometown!Cause that's a thing that never happens. The other idea with my fest is the mixed genres from oi to käng!Cause usually it's all centered to one or two kinds of punk.I will think I did a pretty good job there!

2. This fest will be in Västerås. How many tickets have you sold and how many tickets are you aloud to sale? How does it use to be in Västerås when it comes to live gigs, much audience or is it a cold city?

I actually sold this fest out, So it went much better than I thought! I had 120 tickets to each day and it's all gone, But most of the tickets have been bought of people from other cities in Sweden (from Piteå to Malmö) so thats great fun!

Västerås is a very hard and strange town to arrange gigs in, cause you never know how it will be. Are the people coming, or are they home jerking off? Most of the times it seems that people prefer there dicks and clits, before listen to music! Some of the gigs are almost sold out and the next time nobody shows upp (on gigs with better bands) and you dont understand nothing. But at my last gig with Dissober and Smalltown we had over 110 people there so I hope we are on a upgoing spiral!

3. Will there be any distros or other merch for sale?

Yeah hard and smart is coming with their distro, Skrammel is also showing up on Saturday! Then every band has their own merch/records ofcourse! I will sell Dead Rhythm Fest shirts and bags!

4. Do you think this fest will be back next year as well?

Yeah the date is already set to 4-5:th April and I will present the first bands on DR#1 .5 bands is already at the lineup and this time we have a band from england . So it's gonna be interesting! I hope to do this 2 times one on the spring and one to celebrate the fall!

5. Please, tell me more about Dead Rythm, do you arrange club gigs as well? Are you alone with the work or do you have any help from other people?

Yeah I do club gigs also(next is 12;th october with Reidar from Antipati and Jonas from Gatans Lag doing an acoustic set) then I will try do at least one gig every month! Have some fine upcoming shows I hope to announce in the upcoming weeks! I used to do this club a few years back on a legendary pub called Taj Mahal here in town, but it went bankrubt so I took a pause for a few years, but started again in September last year! Yeah I arrange everything by myself, but I had help from friends printing posters, giving me a ride, but most of the things I do by myself!(easier with no one to argue with)

6. What do you think about the Västerås punk scene? Any bands you wanna recommend?

In Västerås we have a lot of bands but few places to play, So I guess we have a very good scene if you only concentrate on the bands. We have the two comebacking bands Bombshell Rocks and Dissober, both bands is going to play a few shows this year and Bombshell is going to release 2 new songs! Otherwise we have Angers Curse who been around for a couple of years now and I think they got their real break this year with a shitload of gigs everywhere!

And ofcourse we have Slaktrens,Suffer The Pain, Bombs Of Hades(metal but very punk)

7. Is it possible to buy alcohol at the venue?
Well Ofcourse, I don't know the last time I was on a sober gig ,I think music and alcohol is the best mix ever! On this fest its arranged like a private party so the beer will be cheap and cold! And the Liqor will be strong and violent! I actually had a brewery making a Dead Rhythm Ipa so I'm psyched about that!

8. If you have anything you want to add feel free to do it.

Sorry for my bad english!
but i will citate Void!

*I'm not the hand of their tools
I'm gonna live by my rules
Why should I listen to those fools
I'm gonna live by my rules*

Buy records,go to gigs,drink beer!
And dont forget www.facebook.com/klubbdeadrhythm for the latest info of the shows!

Thanx a lot!

Review: The Bristles - Bigger than punk

The Bristles - Bigger than punk (CD)
http://thebristles.wordpress.com

Listen and learn... To Bristelize something is to take an orginal idea an make it heavier, harder and often better because of the rock n roll touch. That's exactly what The Bristles anno 2012 does. In this case is the original idea old school US hardcore like Minor Threat or Gorilla Biscuits but after the Bristelizing is the output something else, it is the sound of The Bristles. I think you know by now that The Bristles was formed in the early 80.s and they are just as pissed today as they were back in the days, the biggest difference is probably the lyrics, which are more mature today. And the political lyrics are fucking excellent with always current topics about the sick society. Two years have passed since their last album was released, I really liked that album (Reflections of the bourgeois society) and they continue almost like that album ended, but "Bigger than punk" is a bit harder but still with the punk rock feeling. The cover is awfull, but the music contents is fantastic. Finally, the reggae song Spirit Way isn't bad at all.

Interview: Meinhof

Here's an interview with Meinhof from UK. It's Jarek who answered my questions about the band, the scene, Sweden and much more. A big thanx to him and to the band who I consider as one of the best existing bands in this genre right now.

Ok, let's go. Please, start to introduce the band members. Do you play in other bands as well? And what else do you do except playing punk?

I play the guitar, and mostly do the songs... Rosy sings and plays the bass, Frank is our drummer. I also play in Unfixed, but it is like playing in the same band, haha... Well, it is hard to say what else I do except playing punk, as I am a normal, regular person doing loads of stuff every day... Even if mostly it is connected with punk, then still I wouldn't know where to start...

Ok, well we don't need the long story now so let's continue. You have done at least two gigs in Sweden, at Punk Illegal, what do you remember from those gigs, and the festival?

The fest is very impressive and well organized... I think this organizing must be a Swedish thing, haha... I remeber great shows, cool punx from allover the world and nice atmosphere! I noticed, that the last time we played, in 2011, there was not really good turn up... And the event did not happen this year... Must be some problems with the fest, I guess.

Yeah, the most things with Punk Illegal is really impressive. The festival will probably be back in 2013. And while we are into the DIY thing, what do you think of the DIY scene of today? You have toured many countries so you must have seen pretty much?

The DIY punk scene is pretty the same all over the Europe, however it seems, that it is better organized in some countries... I don't wanna point them, as usually we meet very cool people who try their best with the opportunities they have at their hands, so I wouldn't make feel someone "worst" because of his origin... In general, the scene is still strong, but unfortunatelly there are less and less people involved in it, year by year... Maybe that's not the best to compare to 90's... but yes, 90"s were massive compering to contemporary scene.

And if we continue with Meinhof in particular, how would you describe your music and your lyrics for those who will see/hear you for the first time?

Definitelly we play d-beat, as I consider "d-beat" as the way to play the drums, not a style... We are trying to make it a crusty way, but with a healthy dose of melody... Our lyrics usually express our "polical" views, and there is loads of sadness and depressive stuff on them, but on the other hand, we are trying to spread some optimistic stuff as well, as I personally think, that punk is the only solution and answer. At least, it is working for me!

That 's true, so I guess your opinion for fashion punks and poser punks etc is not the best?

Well, there is an importance for punk to be "colorful", if you know what I mean? This way, punk was never fully commercialized or fashioned by music business. In short, there is a space for so called "fashion" punx, however I don't feel qualified to judge other people by the music they listen or clothes they wear... I think attitudes and beliefs are much more important, so it is more complex thing...

Last year when I was on the Spotlicks/Buiten Gebruik tour did I met older punks who didn't know what a "distro" was for an example. Well, we might not be able to judge people but I thought it was strange. Ok, so which bands will you get your influences from?

I think, that some punks are not well aware of DIY punk scene existence, so maybe it is better not to judge them, but to try, but to try to introduce it to them... Some of them will get it quickly, I bet. Some of them will be assholes anyways, haha... OK, what influeces? Swedish hardcore, of course!!! Hahaha...

Yeah, one of them actually bought a record from me, so I might have learned him haha. It's really strange for me, if I look at swedes in general to understand how we can be one of the countries who influence bands from all over the world with aggressive music. We are not aggressive people. I guess it must be the free music school the kids learn to handle their instruments. Please, write a few lines of each album you've released

I did an interview with Victims drummer some years ago, to my own punk zine... And that's what he said; Swedish kids are better provided and looked after by government to be good musicians... First album, "The Rush Hour Of Human Misery" is a traditional crust-punk with untraditional "drummer"... "Under The Burning Sky Of Future Events" is our expression of love to some talented Swedish kids, especially Avskum, haha... And the drummer is already traditional! "8 Drops Of Blood" is our best achievement, in my personal opinion. And the last record, "Mother" could be a side B for "8 Drops Of Blood", haha...

Ok, as we'll keep this interview pretty short will I ask you if you have any last comments and what is your future plans?

Thanx for interview. My future plan is to play with my 5 yeras old son, Erik.

Review: The Frenzy of tongs

The Frenzy of tongs -
The piper at the gates of dumb (CD)
http://myspace.com/thefrenzyoftongs
(SDM(UK) Musick)

I don't know a shit about this band or the members, but my first expression is that they are complete mad. I get Toy Dolls and Nofx vibes even if the music isn't just like that. It's more straight on fast punkrock. Anyway, it's charming and I think that they will be something special live. I also get some american college movie vibes, like Good Charlotte and stuff like that but this is harder and like 1000 times better, more like Sloppy Seconds and Screeching Weasel. I really like this and will listen to this record more times.

Interview: Toxik Ephex

Toxik Ephex comes from Aberdeen, just like Jolly Bob. They're playing punk and they have a very special sound. They have been around since the 80.s but I hadn't heard them before the end of 2011. This is just a part from the entire interview that will be published in Schizo #8 which will be out in May 2012. If you haven't heard Toxik Ephex, take a listen to the Youtube video in the end of this interview. A big thanx to Fred who answered my questions.

Hello Fred, Do you please wanna introduce the band? Current members, and other info. And also, how did you pick your name and what does it really mean?

Currently, the band line-up is
Inspector Blake – Lead gtr, backing vocs
Dod Copland – vocs, jokes, mayhem, flashing lights and magic tricks
Dave Wilkinson – Rhythm gtr, backing vocs
Frankie Benzie – Rhythm gtr
Chiz Pirie – Drums
Ross Cunningham – Bass

Our name … well we started out as ‘The Abductors’. However, due to a high profile child abduction in Aberdeen, shortly after we chose the name, we had to consider changing our name … although we did hang on to it for about a year after. ‘Toxik Ephex’ came from a pharmaceutics textbook which sat permanently on my desk when I was employed as a pharmacy technician on leaving school.

How would you describe your music?

We describe our music as melodic punk … as we would the majority of early punk which inspired us to form a band in 1979. The UK Subs were the biggest influence on my early songwriting, I thought they wrote perfect punk songs.

You have your own label where you released your first 7", is it still active? Any other cool releases on that label?

The label is no longer active, but it could easily be resurrected if we chose to. I still have the original artwork for the label. Don’t think I would produce vinyl again tho, it’s too big an outlay for a band who just play a gig every once and a while when they feel like it. We released the Toxik Ephex/Oi Polloi split album ‘Mad as Fuck’ on Green Vomit as well as an EP by Distorted Truth entitled ‘Victim of the Law’ The Adventures of Nobby Porthole was a joint venture between Green Vomit and One Up Records.

Do you have much problem with EDL/SDL in Aberdeen?

We have a National Front which formed a couple of years ago and has stood for local as well as Scottish parliamentary elections….. they have not done particularly well. They have only very recently had an application refused for a march in Aberdeen …. scheduled for 20th April – Adolf Hitler’s birthday. I don’t have a lot of good to say about our local council, but I applaud them for seeing sense and stopping the application in it’s tracks.

And so to answer the question directly, we have a potential problem which needs keeping a close eye on, but the NF have not really achieved anything of note in Aberdeen.

How active are you nowadays? How much do you play live, and is there any upcoming releases?

We do about two or three gigs a year. It’s difficult to do any more than that. I am a self employed musician and have gigs almost every weekend with a ceilidh band (Iron Broo), so it’s difficult to squeeze in Toxik gigs. We have some new songs, but it’s a struggle getting everyone together to rehearse and record them. Runnin Feart Records are looking to release them on vinyl, but I suspect Runnin Feart will be ‘Runnin out of patience’ if we don’t get our finger out.
