Interview: Striktlickers (Sweden)

It was 3 years since I sent the questions for this interview to Viktor who do the vocals in Striktlickers and run the War and Hate festival as well. Striktlickers doesn't exist anymore, but I am pretty satisfied with this interview so read what Viktor have to say... 

1.Where comes the apathy from? And is Striktlickers your way to convey your feelings?

Borlänge are the poison of God, and will soon be destroyed for the sins that have been going on there and also my another home.

2. You Viktor, arrange the festival War and Hate, and said in Schizo #6 that whats happen in Borlänge stay in Borlänge, but what the fuck, let us know what really happend?

3. Who are the members in the band?

Striktlickers was me, A, L, and N.
4. You have record a bunch of new songs, and what I've heard of them must I say that it's your best songs so far. I think the sound of everything is better. Have you got any good or bad critics and what will happen with the songs now?

Probably it will rot in the “worlds” of the underground scene, or maybe released of someone that are dumb enough. Some of the new songs are on Youtube nowadays. And some cassettes will maybe be released for the chosen ones, which have fully supported us from the beginning. We where never accepted of collective in the scene, but we created our own world, instead. When one door are closed, another are widely open.

5. Well, I know you said something about a Malaysian label. How did you got in touch?

Contacted thru Myspace, but we they never got in touch again. I can understand why. I don’t see this “labels” as serious.
6. What do you think of the PC-Maffia and the PC-police? Is the world already to ruined that it's better to don't care? I think the cover of your new record will provoke tons of people. I also think that's the reason since the punk cannot provoke the society but you have turned it to provoke the punx... is that a sensible thought?

Political correctness have always been a slavery for the mind of “punks”. I thought in the beginning of my travel in the punk scene it was about extreme nihilism, individuality and madness. But in the end, it’s all about alcoholism, decadence and feeling sad for themselves. And listen to bad records, and of course they are some bands that I can fully respect. But they are not many, Återfall nowadays are one of those. And I will always have feelings for band such as Anti-Cimex, Driller killer, Wolfpack and so on. And some other primitive kängpunkbands that are not destroyed of the political correctness and have the right energy within like Dismachine. And it was just not provoking, we showed them the truth, it wasn’t no joke at all.

7. When did you formed the band and what have you released before? Any gigs you wanna talk about? Namedrop some bands that have been important for you? And I guess that the name is consolidated from a few bands? Is it to honour them or what's the deal?

Striktlickers was formed as a allience back in 2006 of me, Pk-Johan and Alice, and was ended in the summer of the 2011, in july. Because we walked different parts, but they are no hard feelings against each other – we just moved on different paths. All our gigs was pretty chaotic, and maybe it’s best to let that sort of things disappear in the dust. The nail in your eye. And also: Rupture and Warcollapse was also two important band for us as inspiration.

8. Since you live in Borlänge, what do you think about the major festival Peace and Love?

When Peace and love disappeared in Borlänge, something interesting happened. A feeling of emptiness was floating around the town, like grey dust. And it will be interesting in the future, to see what will happend.

9. How do you spend your days? It would be a shock if you say; Wake up in the morning, breakfast, Days of our lives on TV etc..

“I” was 16 years old when Striktlickers started, so then we where into the gymnasium and raised hell. But we wen’t out better then the most. Alice now have his exam in engineering, from the university. I am doing my studies and training, and nightly activities. L are now working, and have his own world, and N have moved on, doing studies and a power electronics-project called Marritt. And the rest are secrets, that you will have to be told in person.

10. Alcohol, drugs...? Malmö call themself Crime City, But Borlänge doesn't have a good reputation either. Is it just misery?

All towns are all the same, so fucking lame. But alcohol and drugs are poisonous for some people, who become slaves of it, and others that can’t handle it. But I don’t think that is really important, and if you can’t handle it: Suit yourself.


12. What do you think about the swedish punk scene nowadays? And what is punk for you?

A mental prison, with their barriers that you have to destroy. I would see it as active nihilism for some, and slavery for others.

13. What makes you to carry on with Striktlickers? And what about the future, when it comes to the band, you will hopefully release this new record, what will happen more?

Striktlickers are now forever dead and the crown, you never can carry. And wil be like salt in an open soar.

14. Are you satisfied with this pretty short interview? Otherwhise, ask me a better question if you want. Well, end this now just how you want. Cheers!

Interview: Slaktrens

Hey Johan, what's up? Please start to introduce the band. And how has the band developed since you released Ur Balans 7" 2010?

 Hi Micke! Here's the story of the band: first it was only me that recorded a pretty shitty demo (mangelattack), then Stefan joined and we did the ur balans 7", the strålande tider 12" and a bunch of tracks for comps. Then Befa and Tobbe joined, Stefan quit and Joel joined. We did our first recording as a full band this spring. It's not released yet but sooner or more probably later those songs will be on a split lp with Stick & Brinn. (Update: it will be a Slaktrens 7" insted of the split)

I like the titles of your songs, they are fun but also smart and directly, what is your lyrics about and which of your lyrics are you most satisfied with?

Generally just stuff that gets me annoyed or pissed off. I dont think im very good at writing lyrics and i dont have any favourites really.

You also run Rawby Records, what is the future plans? And you (and Masken) have just released Utanförskapet, what can you say about that LP?

No big plans really. Im still waiting for the Freaknation/Violent Headache split that i took a little part in paying for, to be released. I have really high expectations for that 7", especially the Freaknation side. The spanish version of Hellnation! I just hope it gets released sometime... Sometimes it feels like DIY = delay it yourself haha. Yeah the Utanförskapet 12" is really fucking great! Best record 2012 if you ask me, but i guess im a little biased hahaha. I guess i will also be involved in the Stick & brinn/Slaktrens split release.

Slaktrens, Nödslakt, Slaktattack, Skitslakt... ?

Slakt is a good word to put in a band name. 

Interview: M.O.R.A (Finland)

Here's M.O.R.A from Finland. One of the best existing band when it comes to brutal punk. This interview is just a small part of the interview which you can read in its entirety in Schizo Fanzine #9. Ok, start with a short story about M.O.R.A, members, history and what does the name mean?

Yaki: It was Ruriks and Turos (Ratface, St.Hood) idea to form M.O.R.A. somewhere around 2006 I think. Katja and myself joined soon after. So first it was Rurik on guitar, Katja on bass, myself on drums and Turo doing the vocals. Things didn’t advance quite as one would hope at the beginning, and after Turo decided he couldn’t give his all to M.O.R.A. since he already had two prior bands to see to Rurik, Katja and me ended up just fiddling around for a while. After Piia and Suvi joined the band around 2008 things gradually started to happen so to speak... But all in all M.O.R.A.s current lineup is as follows: Piia & Suvi: Vocals, Rurik: guitar, Katja: bass, Yaki: drums.

I’ll tell you what comes to my mind; Mora is town in Sweden. In this cozy swedish town they make knives. These knives are very, very popular in Finland. They’re good for both construction-work and for gutting your best friend after you had a night of Koskenkorva-vodka and speed. Ask any finnish guy over 16 what comes to mind when they hear the word mora and it’ll be the knife. With the periods between the letters, we’re trying to take some distance to all the violence. Also, I googled the bands name and it turns out that mora means blueberry or something in spanish, so it’s not that hard-core, now is it?

You sound so fucking pissed, what make you most angry in this society? And I guess that’s what you write your lyrics about as well?

Piia: Everytime when starting to write stuff I endup pondering about grievances. It seems hard to write about good vibrations, payday or sunshine with all the crazy shit happening around you. Greed and ignorance are subjects that occure in everyday life from which one can instantly obtain lyrics for 3 albums and then some.

Finnish is the most brutal language or? Have you ever thought about write lyrics in english?

Rurik: Since we are Finns I believe our mother tongue was the logical way to go conserning the vocals. I think after finnish rap came around people have been more inclined to do other kind of music in finnish aswell, allthough punk bands have been singing in finnish since day one, but in metallic hardcore it’s still pretty rare.

Tell me about your CD you released. What have the response been?

Yaki: We decided from the beginning that we were going to do this CD all by ourselves. I’m happy that we’ve gotten some great reviews from abroad, and that a lot of people outside the so called scene have found our music! One review said that our band was probably a joke, founded in two minutes and broken in less and Maximum Rocknroll truly hated us! Their review was funny as hell so thanks MMR, we had a good laugh!

Piia: The album has been received really well all over the world. It was made by the band from start to finish, and we’re proud of that! CD format seems to be the only issue, but the truth is we didn’t have the finances to put it out in vinyl. If people wouldn’t mind giving our music a chance and stop bitching about the album being a CD they might be pleasantly surprised!

What can we do to fought elitism in the scene? Have you got any problems with that somewhere?

Piia: Does such a thing still exist? I remember a time when there were people who only listened to certain kind of music and wore a certain brand of clothes but thats in the past or at least it has escaped my attention during the last few years. I wish people would listen to more punk and rap so they wouldn’t get too caught up on hardcore. There’s so much good music being made outside this genre!

Rurik: I disagree; elitism is something that’s always been around when it comes to the hc scene. But since people are getting older things have calmed down a notch, and now there’s a much better atmosphere here.

Let me know your future plans, have you got any feedback from any labels? I really hope and think you will have a good future

Yaki: No feedback from the labels, but I wouldn’t mind if someone wanted to participate in publishing our next release... The ideal situation would be that a couple of record labels from different countries would want to release our album so we’d get more exposure abroad. Since now we’ve been selling most of our records in shows, though a few record stores have it in their selection as well. A handfull of few people have ordered the CD from us via mail.

Review from Schizo #8   [MORA - S/t CD]
This Helsinki band really know how to play angry hardcore, with some trash metal influences. And the both female singers have brutal voices, the finnish language make it even more brutal and better. This wouldn't sound good in norwegian for an example. It's 9 tracks on this CD and 16 furious minutes. MORA is a band that follow the finnish tradition playing this kind of brutal punk. The sound quality is perfect and I can just congratulate this 5 piece band to a great release. I will follow this band for sure. Order this CD and you will get the finnish lyrics translated to english. If you take the hardcore from Disrupt and the trash from Beyond Description will you get close to MORA. I am not a fan of music with too much trash influences, but MORA mix it just perfect. And they do it so well that I have to consider if an interview in Schizo Fanzine can be possible for the future.

Interview: Burnt Cross

I have interviewed Burnt Cross a couple of times. And it's always nice to hear what they think. This interview was made by Jonas who run the blog Eslöv: Kategori A. 1. How did you get into punk? Was it the politics or the music that made you want to be part of the scene? Also, is it as important for you to make a politically relevant record as it is to make good music?

I was about 13 and into metal when i first heard the Sex Pistols and then i went on to search out more punk and the first LP i brought was Crass "Penis Envy" which led me onto the political punk side of things, this led to finding out about bands like Active Minds, Civilised Society, Conflict ect and that inspired us to start our first band Active Response when we were 15. We got involved in doing benefit gigs,writing for zines and activism from then on for a few years till the 90's when we got more involved in the free party scene. For me punk has always been about the politics, i can listen to The Misfits or Ramones quite happily but a punk song that is angry and has a message hits the spot more because its who i am, its what i feel inside so hearing it in this primitive form with a thumping soundtrack is just great. Punk is only a small amount of the music i listen to but it is the one that speaks to make more than the other genres i like, its the one that dominates my life in a way that its always there even if im not listening to it. No other music does that to me, no where near as much.

2. What made you settle for the name “Burnt Cross”?

I just wanted a less generic political name that doesn't use system/state style thing in it and i love my old school metal, also a nod to our dislike of religion i guess. A couple of people picked up that it has connetations of the KKK and i did think that myself but we are strongly anti fascist and it comes out in our lyrics so no confusion there. As we are just a 2 piece band i didnt have to fight too much to keep the name, its what i like about doing all the music and arrangements myself, you are the boss

3. Are you vegetarians (like me)? A mate of mine and me have an ongoing, neverending discussion on veggie food. He thinks it’s immoral to make veggie food that taste like meat, whereas I think it’s good, cos you can make splendid veggie brekkies with veggie bacon and anyone who wants to be a vegetarian can become one and still it what he or she likes, only now it‘s cruelty-free. What do you think about this question?

Yeah, we are veggies and i never really thought about this too much, i always thought that there was nothing wrong with something that tastes like meat, its an alternative so its what it is meant to be but i can understand why some people would find it offensive and respect thier view. If people give up meat cos they can get the same taste without the cruelty thats great even if it seems a bit of a contradiction, they may not care as much to give up whatever the case but the more numbers the better

4. Media covers up and lies about protest, in the UK as well as where I am, in Sweden, but some news of anger in Britain has made it’s way to the Swedish media. I take it that you lot are part of the fightback, so my question is, what’s the fightback like? What’s it’s strengths and what’s it’s weaknesses? How are ordinary working class people affected by Cameron’s policies?

Yes im involved a fair amount in activism, just this weekend i organised a shutdown of our local starbucks for 3 hours and get involved in local anti war group and on the streets against far right groups like the EDL. Ive been involved in activism for 20 years from hunt sabbing/animal rescue to enviromental and anti fascist protest..i will probably be doing it my whole life. The fightback here is weak to be honest, compared with countries like Italy and Greece. We had a few good protests last year with the students and anti-cuts groups but this year has been quiet. Im hoping that very soon people will start taking to the streets again and show this government of rich wankers that we know what they are up to and we are not going to put up with it. Of course its also up to us to change ourselves, refuse to comply to thier laws that we disagree with and stand against it when you can but also to try to escape the actual system itself by working less or just for yourself, pay less tax, grow your own food, squat, stop consuming so much, do share skills where you trade labour etc.. they are all ways we can ignore thier bullshit and not be a part of it.
Government policy is probably the same as in most countries, fucking up the poor to look after thier rich mates. The national debts are a lie and dont exist, money is made up from a touch of a button and the poor and forced to work like donkeys and witness the better off feeding of thier hardship. Capitalism aint working and the sooner it falls and a more compassionate model is put in place the better. I wont hold my breath.
5. What do you think about the Israel/Palestine conflict and how it‘s reported in western media?

Well our media is more pro Israel but we also get a fair amount of both sides to be honest. I have spent time in Israel and loved it but cant help feeling that it is commiting great grimes against people who are trapped in a prison whilst being bombed. I disagree with all the violence but Israel are at a massive advantage with thier military and weapons. Also the illegal settlements should be stopped and returned (all disputed land returned possibly). Its going to get messy i think but i hope some sort of peace is achieved. I dont know the exact details of all the history of the region either, just the basics so wouldn't want to delve too deep into that debate

6. I promised not to ask you any questions on football, but I’m afraid I must ask you one, namely what you think about the spectacle and multi-billion business modern football has become?

Ha, well i dont watch it, Paul supports Man United but doesnt go to see them i dont think. It has become an expensive hobby if you wanna see your team play and sadly thats the way most things go but like other things like music for example we can do it ourselves and start our own bands or soccer clubs. There is always someone out to turn a profit so just dont get involved in it just like you wouldnt go to see a £100 a show rock star, i would hate all the commercialisation anyhow and rather watch a game at our local playing field.

7. If your music was a sport and not music, which sport would it be? Something hard and physical like rugby, something elegant and precise like snooker or maybe something completely else?

Boxing..it packs a punch..ha ha. Well its got a punchy rhythm and is full of fighting talk so thats the best i can come up with.
8. Any words to your Swedish supporters? Do you like any Swedish bands and would you like to play here? What do you think of Sweden’s “Punk Illegal” Festival?

Paul met a couple of Swedes at a Mob gig this weekend and they were talking about punk bands and the Swedish guy mentioned Burnt Cross so Paul shocked him by saying he was one half of them. Its really nice to meet people who like our stuff and we have people in Norway,Finland, Sweden and Switzeland who distro our music or who get involved in putting the records out so we know that our music is getting out to such places. I tend to listen to more UK/US styles bands as i like to understand the lyrics of music i listen to so dont listen to hardly any foriegn speaking bands to be honest and i think the punk illegal fest looks cool but i also am not heavily into crust/hardcore too much apart from older bands so havent made it over to that festival. I dont actually go to many gigs these days, maybe once a month. Thats another reason why we are just a home recording project, we didnt want to gig. We did 2 gigs with friends playing the other instruments and they went really well but we are not sure about doing it anytime soon.

Interview: P.P.P Records

P.P.P is a new label from Sweden. Their first release was Spotlicks - Spott, bett & tårar 10". I will review that record soon in the future. I wanted to know more about P.P.P so I sent a few questions, and Pontus sent the answers pretty fast. 

1. Hey Pontus and Paul, the name of your label is P.P.P., I guess that two of the P's comes from your names, but what about the third P? How did you come up with the idea for a label?

Hey Micke! That is correct it is our names, the third P can stand for whatever you want haha. No it stands for Pålle, Pontus, Punk, we didnt have any good ideas for the labelname so we had to settle with that. We have had the idea for a label for some time and often when we drank a few beers we talked about it. So one day we decided to really do it, both of us are recordcollectors so we thought it would be fun to see how it is to actually release a vinyl by ourselfs.

2. Your first release was the Spotlicks 10" Spott, bett & tårar. How many copys did you press? And what do you think about Spotlicks?

We ofcourse like Spotlicks and what they do, otherwise we wouldnt release anything with them. The 10" is pressed in 500 copies.

3. What will your upcomming releases be? Any special bands you dream about to release?

There are some discusions about the next release but nothing is carved in stone so I cant say anything more at the moment. It would be really cool to release something with some favourite band, like Bäddat För Trubbel or Discharge haha

4. I know that Spotlicks are your friends, is it bands like them you will focus on or would you encourage bands to send their demos?

At the moment there is really not any need to send demos but maybe in the future. The next band that we release anything with (if everything goes as planed) are also friends to us, everything goes much smoother when we know tha people in the bands. It is ofcourse fun to help some friends band if we like what they do.

5. Are you just gonna release vinyl, or will it be any CDs in the future?

We will stick to vinyl, both me and Pålle are vinyljunkies and dont really care about cds.

6. Please, introduce yourselfs, have you been in any bands, made any fanzines etc? And please, list your top-3 gigs and records (from your collection)

My name is Pontus, I have played in a few punkbands but nothing really serious, we had fun though! Me and a frined wrote a fanzine called "Tristess Zine" a few years back, we released four numbers and had a great time doing it. Pålle have played in a few bands but its long ago, he played drums in HCHC a hardcore band from Stockholm.

Top 3 gigs and records are always hard but something like this:

Gigs:
Electric Wizard at Nalen, Stockholm a week ago. Probably the best gig I have ever been to.
The first time I saw Asta Kask when they started playing again. They played in Kafe 44, Stockholm and it was total chaos, so good! I think it was 2004 or something like that.
Ättestupa in Stockholm 2009 or something like that, great band and a great atmosphere!

Records, much easier:
Shitlickers - Cracked Cop Skulls 7", the best hc release ever.
Darkthrone - Panzerfaust LP, one album I always return to
Black Sabbath - We sold our soul for rock n roll - double LP, this is what started it all for me, early Black Sabbath is probably the best band in the universe.

Interview: Buiten Gebruik

Yay, here is an interview with Buiten Gebruik from Holland. This is just a part of the entire interview that you can read in Schizo Fanzine #7. It's my friend Billie who answered my questions. In the fanzine is there also a couple of questions to Billies daughter Darcy.

So, how is it to play with the other lads in Buiten Gebruik. You told me about a new member in the band, who is that guy? You have good experience from other bands, what is the biggest difference between Buiten and your last band Sangre? What have you guys played in before?

it's just big fun with these kids to rock. With Cleverson I have had bands since 2000 and Peter was allready in the last line up from sangre. Only Leon is for us (musical) a new Jack but as a person he is also one we just know as a good friend... The new bandmember you talk about was when we asked Big John from the Exploited to play second guitar. he promised a few times to come a round but he never did. never trust a Hippy! Extra line...John is a cool guy....

The difference between Buiten Gebruik is the line up (new drums, one guitarinstead of 2 and one vocal instead of 2) and the language of the lyrics. With Sangre we sang in English because of the 2 nationalities of the vocalists (Polish and Dutch) but now I'm on my own i wrote all the lyrics in Dutch. And the name is Dutch too....BTW it means Out of Order! The music remains to be some sort of Dbeat!!



What do you prefer to write about? Is there still topics left for you to write about?

Good one, .the topics are indeed so hard to find. I should just sing about war as a Dbeatsinger but I did so far only 2, just because....uhm...uhm....Discharge does it too. Other lyrics deal about the problem that is from all times, that it's so hard to fit in society, that some friends are stupid, religion is a thankfull subject and let's not forget, the upcoming populism in Holland! Not even upcoming....just populism

Just another question about the tour we did earlier this year. Which place did you like most? Was the tour as you had expected from the beginning?

Fuck, which place I like most, I liked it all very much. Amsterdam I was expecting shit but quite some people showed up. Heerlen was typical last minute booked, in St Etienne we were lucky to play on the afterparty of a few days festival and Marseille was so hard to have any audience on a monday but so nice just to hang out there, a fucking weird city, and Liege was as always so fucking nice and drunk. That's why I couldn't hardly breath or talk in Louvain. Fuck the missing audience... it's just so good to see that there are people worldwide standing by to help us out with our stupid bands and give us food and shelter, sharing it all...man we are the happy few

Dissekerad are a pretty new band from Stockholm, Sweden. They deliver classic D-beat and consist of members from Makabert Fynd among others. It is Mattis who answered my questions about their new tracks, gigs and much more. So sit back and enjoy...

Okey, here we go, please start to introduce the band, members, other bands etc

Well, I'ts me Mattis on guitar, Poffen- vocals, Andre- Bass and Pyri on the drums. We started up like 6 months ago when we celebrated my birthday. I've always wished to have a band with Pyri and I've played with Andre before when he used to be Makabert fynds bass player. Poffen still plays with me in makabert fynd. We made a demo and I was really saticfied with the outcome so we kept on playin. 1 year ago i ment..hehe To include, Pyri is my neighour

Aight, so what kind of music is it, is it another Dis-band with the Discharge logo, or why Dissikerad?

We play straight swedish d-beat hardcore. I can't say we sound a lot like Discharge. The idea of the name come more from what it means than a Dis-name. I came up with it when I wrote some lyrics a while ago. But ofcourse... I love Discharge!!!!

Okey, and you have recorded 11 tracks this weekend, what will you do with those tracks?

Its gonna be an LP on some label. We have offers but we have not yet decided which one we will use. Maby we'll do an european release and an american, as I said.. we havent decided yet. We are still mixin it and we'll see when its finnished. To add.. we also have wishes on some labels that we will send to..

Okey, sounds cool. Have you done any gigs, or will the gig 22 october be the first?

We did a gig on the Punks 44 gig this summer and we will play with D-Clone, Kylmä sota, mob 47, Desperat, Sex dwarf etc on october 20th. After that we dont have any gigs booked. We will probably get some after the LP is released

It's a great line-up for a gig. What do you expect for that gig?

Well, we are really honored ofcourse to play with all those great bands. I really think its gonna be a killer gig. Lots of punk rockers that will tear down the place..hehe Oh.. Kontatto is also playing

Haha, we hope so, I wish I could come that evening, but it doesn't work. Yeah, Kontatto is really familiar with Sweden now, it's a good band and good people. By the way, which labels do you want to release your LP?

Hm, well there's a bunch of awesome labels. Skrammel is one ;0), D-beat & rawpunk, De:nihl, Prank, Feral ward... I can keep goin on for ages hehe

There is a lot of good swedish labels at the moment, that's cool. What do you think of the diy scene in Stockholm and Sweden?

I think its great! Its turning up great new labels and clubs/venues more often now. Stockholm can get better I think, if you compare to other countrys in europe we can still get better

Yeah, I guess you have been around pretty much with Makabert Fynd and have seen a lot of difference. What and where would be the perfect gig for Dissekerad?

I think the gig october 20th is gonna be perfect. I also think we would fit Punk Illegal and Svartmyra

Yeah, it seems like Punk Illegal will be back next year so we can just hope you'll play there. What do you think about Punk Illegal?

I've been there twice and I love that festival. Both of the times I went there I saw a bunch of awesome bands. I also think the park they use is really cozy and the atmosphere is super. Great festival!!

So well, if we try to end this, you have the gig and the lp for the future, but if you would dream, what would you want to happen more in the future then?

Well, to make great records,gigin and having fun!

Interview: Meinhof

Here's an interview with Meinhof from UK. It's Jarek who answered my questions about the band, the scene, Sweden and much more. A big thanx to him and to the band who I consider as one of the best existing bands in this genre right now. 

Ok, let's go. Please, start to introduce the band members. Do you play in other bands as well? And what else do you do except playing punk?

I play the guitar, and mostly do the songs... Rosy sings and plays the bass, Frank is our drummer. I also play in Unfixed, but it is like playing in the same band, haha... Well, it is hard to say what else I do except playing punk, as I am a normal, regular person doing loads of stuff every day... Even if mostly it is connected with punk, then still I wouldn't know where to start...

Ok, well we don't need the long story now so let's continue. You have done at least two gigs in Sweden, at Punk Illegal, what do you remember from those gigs, and the festival?

The fest is very impressive and well organized... I think this organizing must be a Swedish thing, haha... I remeber great shows, cool punx from allover the world and nice atmosphere! I noticed, that the last time we played, in 2011, there was not really good turn up... And the event did not happen this year... Must be some problems with the fest, I guess.

Yeah, the most things with Punk Illegal is really impressive. The festival will probably be back in 2013. And while we are into the DIY thing, what do you think of the DIY scene of today? You have toured many countries so you must have seen pretty much?

The DIY punk scene is pretty the same all over the Europe, however it seems, that it is better organized in some countries... I don't wanna point them, as usually we meet very cool people who try their best with the opportunities they have at their hands, so I wouldn't make feel someone "worst" because of his origin... In general, the scene is still strong, but unfortunatelly there are less and less people involved in it, year by year... Maybe that's not the best to compare to 90's... but yes, 90"s were massive compering to contemporary scene.

And if we continue with Meinhof in particular, how would you describe your music and your lyrics for those who will see/hear you for the first time?

Definitelly we play d-beat, as I consider "d-beat" as the way to play the drums, not a style... We are trying to make it a crusty way, but with a healthy dose of melody... Our lyrics usually express our "polical" views, and there is loads of sadness and depressive stuff on them, but on the other hand, we are trying to spread some optimistic stuff as well, as I personally think, that punk is the only solution and answer. At least, it is working for me!

That 's true, so I guess your opinion for fashion punks and poser punks etc is not the best?

Well, there is an importance for punk to be "colorful", if you know what I mean? This way, punk was never fully commercialized or fashioned by music business. In short, there is a space for so called "fashion" punx, however I don't feel qualified to judge other people by the music they listen or clothes they wear... I think attitudes and beliefs are much more important, so it is more complex thing...

Last year when I was on the Spotlicks/Buiten Gebruik tour did I met older punks who didn't know what a "distro" was for an example. Well, we might not be able to judge people but I thought it was strange. Ok, so which bands will you get your influences from?

I think, that some punks are not well aware of DIY punk scene existence, so maybe it is better not to judge them, but to try, but to try to introduce it to them... Some of them will get it quickly, I bet. Some of them will be assholes anyways, haha... OK, what influeces? Swedish hardcore, of course!!! Hahaha...

Yeah, one of them actually bought a record from me, so I might have learned him haha. It's really strange for me, if I look at swedes in general to understand how we can be one of the countries who influence bands from all over the world with aggressive music. We are not aggressive people. I guess it must be the free music school the kids learn to handle their instruments. Please, write a few lines of each album you've released

I did an interview with Victims drummer some years ago, to my own punk zine... And that's what he said; Swedish kids are better provided and looked after by government to be good musicians... First album, "The Rush Hour Of Human Misery" is a traditional crust-punk with untraditional "drummer"... "Under The Burning Sky Of Future Events" is our expression of love to some talented Swedish kids, especially Avskum, haha... And the drummer is already traditional! "8 Drops Of Blood" is our best achievement, in my personal opinion. And the last record, "Mother" could be a side B for "8 Drops Of Blood", haha...

Ok, as we'll keep this interview pretty short will I ask you if you have any last comments and what is your future plans?

Interview: Moral Dilemma

Moral Dilemma from UK is one of my favorite bands. I missed them at Punk Illegal when they played there for some years ago, too bad, but I hope I will get another chans sometime. Here is a part of the interview that will be published in Schizo Fanzine #9 which will be out before the end of 2012.

 

Hello, tell me about your summer 2012, you did a tour with the legendary D.R.I, did you have a good time on the roads?

Yea the D.R.I tour was great, for the most part is was us and D.R.I with metal bands every night due to them being a "cross over" band. We always liked the idea of playing with bands of a different genre, and weren't too sure how a predominantly metal audience would take to our music. But fortunately they where open minded and seemed to really enjoy what we where doing. It was cool to see guys in Manowar t-shirts down the front waving devil horns and head banging, which isn't what we're used too so it was a refreshing change and a lot of fun
Please, write some lines about each member of the band

I'm Craig- I play guitar, I sing, I have an unhealthy obsession with movies, Chloe plays bass and sings, loves yoga, and is doing a phd in english literature. Pasty plays drums and is called Pasty because he is from Cornwall home of the cornish pasty

What is your lyrics about?

Our lyrics tackle things that we feel are important. Generally the things within society that angers us and  that we would like to see change. To summarise some of the themes without getting into specifics: Exploitation, struggle,  injustice, and our governments roll within international politics etc.

What is you influences, and what characterize your sound?

We all listen to completely different things, when we're touring what comes on the stereo in the van usually sounds like some kind of crazy spastic mix tape, we can go from listening to Tragedy to Motown classics, to Bob Marly to James Brown to the Swinging utters, to Fear and the Circle jerks, to Ike and Tina. We've NEVER made a conscious effort to sound like a particular band.

We don't really categorize our sound, its too difficult to do as our sound can change quite dramatically from song to song we just call ourselves a punk band, I find sub genres to be boring and tedious, and always under scrutiny from someone else's definition.

Summer 2012: Gelo from Italy

1. Please introduce the band, members, history, influences etc.

Gelo is a crust hardcore band from Treviso, small city in the north east of SHITALY (Italy is completely fucked up country) however the band is formed about 4 years ago by Cialcia (voice) Marvin (drums) Julian (bass) Ale and Mirko (guitars). During these year we support a lot of bands like Oi polloi, Riistetyt, Sotatila, Sakatat, Dead, LDOH, Infekcia, Pavilionul 32, Meinhof, AK47, Nulla Osta, Aktivna Propaganda, Distaste, Jonestown, Czosnek, K.A.I.N., Icon of evil, Campus stermini .... and we played in several festival and benefit show all over Europe We realised a CD-r and an LP split that you can download from our website: www.gelohc.com



2. What is your plans for the summer 2012? Any other news you want to share?
