Shiro , Japcore from Finland

I was gonna do a compilation tape back in 1997-98. But it was never released. I found a tape with Shiro, who was gonna participate on the tape. Here's the 6 tracks I got from them. If I remember it right is it members from the fantastic band Kirous who had this project. They wanted to play japcore, and sure they do. I really like this dirty and raw mangel. What do you think?

Interview: M.O.R.A (Finland)

Here's M.O.R.A from Finland. One of the best existing band when it comes to brutal punk. This interview is just a small part of the interview which you can read in its entirety in Schizo Fanzine #9. Ok, start with a short story about M.O.R.A, members, history and what does the name mean?

Yaki: It was Ruriks and Turos (Ratface, St.Hood) idea to form M.O.R.A. somewhere around 2006 I think. Katja and myself joined soon after. So first it was Rurik on guitar, Katja on bass, myself on drums and Turo doing the vocals. Things didn’t advance quite as one would hope at the beginning, and after Turo decided he couldn’t give his all to M.O.R.A. since he already had two prior bands to see to Rurik, Katja and me ended up just fiddling around for a while. After Piia and Suvi joined the band around 2008 things gradually started to happen so to speak... But all in all M.O.R.A.s current lineup is as follows: Piia & Suvi: Vocals, Rurik: guitar, Katja: bass, Yaki: drums.

I’ll tell you what comes to my mind; Mora is town in Sweden. In this cozy swedish town they make knives. These knives are very, very popular in Finland. They’re good for both construction-work and for gutting your best friend after you had a night of Koskenkorva-vodka and speed. Ask any finnish guy over 16 what comes to mind when they hear the word mora and it’ll be the knife. With the periods between the letters, we’re trying to take some distance to all the violence. Also, I googled the bands name and it turns out that mora means blueberry or something in spanish, so it’s not that hard-core, now is it?

You sound so fucking pissed, what make you most angry in this society? And I guess that’s what you write your lyrics about as well?

Piia: Everytime when starting to write stuff I endup pondering about grievances. It seems hard to write about good vibrations, payday or sunshine with all the crazy shit happening around you. Greed and ignorance are subjects that occure in everyday life from which one can instantly obtain lyrics for 3 albums and then some.

Finnish is the most brutal language or? Have you ever thought about write lyrics in english?

Rurik: Since we are Finns I believe our mother tongue was the logical way to go conserning the vocals. I think after finnish rap came around people have been more inclined to do other kind of music in finnish aswell, allthough punk bands have been singing in finnish since day one, but in metallic hardcore it’s still pretty rare.

Tell me about your CD you released. What have the response been?

Yaki: We decided from the beginning that we were going to do this CD all by ourselves. I’m happy that we’ve gotten some great reviews from abroad, and that a lot of people outside the so called scene have found our music! One review said that our band was probably a joke, founded in two minutes and broken in less and Maximum Rocknroll truly hated us! Their review was funny as hell so thanks MMR, we had a good laugh!

Piia: The album has been received really well all over the world. It was made by the band from start to finish, and we’re proud of that! CD format seems to be the only issue, but the truth is we didn’t have the finances to put it out in vinyl. If people wouldn’t mind giving our music a chance and stop bitching about the album being a CD they might be pleasantly surprised!

What can we do to fought elitism in the scene? Have you got any problems with that somewhere?

Piia: Does such a thing still exist? I remember a time when there were people who only listened to certain kind of music and wore a certain brand of clothes but thats in the past or at least it has escaped my attention during the last few years. I wish people would listen to more punk and rap so they wouldn’t get too caught up on hardcore. There’s so much good music being made outside this genre!

Rurik: I disagree; elitism is something that’s always been around when it comes to the hc scene. But since people are getting older things have calmed down a notch, and now there’s a much better atmosphere here.

Let me know your future plans, have you got any feedback from any labels? I really hope and think you will have a good future

Yaki: No feedback from the labels, but I wouldn’t mind if someone wanted to participate in publishing our next release... The ideal situation would be that a couple of record labels from different countries would want to release our album so we’d get more exposure abroad. Since now we’ve been selling most of our records in shows, though a few record stores have it in their selection as well. A handfull of few people have ordered the CD from us via mail.

Review from Schizo #8   [MORA - S/t CD]
This Helsinki band really know how to play angry hardcore, with some trash metal influences. And the both female singers have brutal voices, the finnish language make it even more brutal and better. This wouldn't sound good in norwegian for an example. It's 9 tracks on this CD and 16 furious minutes. MORA is a band that follow the finnish tradition playing this kind of brutal punk. The sound quality is perfect and I can just congratulate this 5 piece band to a great release. I will follow this band for sure. Order this CD and you will get the finnish lyrics translated to english. If you take the hardcore from Disrupt and the trash from Beyond Description will you get close to MORA. I am not a fan of music with too much trash influences, but MORA mix it just perfect. And they do it so well that I have to consider if an interview in Schizo Fanzine can be possible for the future.

I just wanna share this song. It's a Swedish band called Nonsens and this is the only track I've heard by them. It was the skateboard label G.spot who released a compilation back in the mid 90s. And this is one of the best tracks from that comp. Swedish ska with Swedish lyrics, it's not everyday you'll hear that.

Von bööm started in 84 and and recorded a demo, some of the songs are released on the LP compilation " Really Fast" # 3. The band played for a while but they decided to quit. In 88 the band started again with a couple of other guys. One demo was recorded. The band broke up again. In 95 the band started once again, and once again with other members. 2004 was the year for the latest re-union. Back with vengeance, old punks never die

Download: Pass Out, punk from Stockholm

Pass Out was formed sometimes back in 1994 and existed for about 5 years. Some of our highlights was the gig in Göteborg which was a blast. We did also a gig at Smash the discos who was arranged by Farliga Firman in Stockholm. I noticed that some people liked the youtube clip I have made. So I took our 2.nd and 3.rd recordings and zipped them into a rar.file which you can download for free.

Pass Out was a 6-piece band and we all had different influences I guess it's possible to hear that we're no copycats. I made most of the music and some lyrics and I was most influenced by punk and Oi! And that's probably our main sound. The saxophone made much for the sound too. // Micke (Schizo)

Documentary: The day the country died

The Day the Country Died - A History of Anarcho Punk.

This is one of  the best punk documentarys I’ve ever seen. It’s about the early anarcho punk scene in the UK. And it’s fun to see a british documentary that contains so much more than just the classic 77-bands. The many interviews with people from bands like Subhumans, Zounds, Rubella Ballet, Conflict and Crass are very informative. This is a documentary that portray the anarcho scene in generally and specific events in particularly, like the riots between punks and cops outside Brixton Academy when Conflict was going to play there.

It’s sad but true but many topics are still very current. And what people say about the punk in the early 80.s could be about today as well. This is a very interesting documentary, much because of the topics, it’s more than just all that crap about how sick Sid Vicious was as british punk documentarys use to be about. There is much more meaning in this documentary. The only thing I miss is that it could emerged what band they played when they play music. It is lot's of music and I guess you will find a couple of new bands.

This anarcho wave is far from the 77-wave when the punx just wanted to be rebels in the punk uniform and the bands just looking around for record deals insted of thinking  D.I.Y. This anarcho wave was about “freedom, peace and unity” and 100 % honest. 

Except all good interviews will you see a lot of rare live sequences. And the quality is perfect from the beginning to the end. This movie is fantastic and not a pointer that PC punx can use. It’s more a lot of sense and a big portion of truth. And it's also nice to see how people who were active in bands in the early 80.s have kept their ideals of what kind of society they wanna live in.

Interview: Toxik Ephex

Toxik Ephex comes from Aberdeen, just like Jolly Bob. They're playing punk and they have a very special sound. They have been around since the 80.s but I hadn't heard them before the end of 2011. This is just a part from the entire interview that will be published in Schizo #8 which will be out in May 2012. Hello Fred, Do you please wanna introduce the band? Current members, and other info. And also, how did you pick your name and what does it really mean?

Currently, the band line-up is

Dave Wilkinson – Rhythm gtr, backing vocs
Frankie Benzie – Rhythm gtr
Chiz Pirie – Drums
Ross Cunningham – Bass

Our name … well we started out as ‘The Abductors’. However, due to a high profile child abduction in Aberdeen, shortly after we chose the name, we had to consider changing our name … although we did hang on to it for about a year after. ‘Toxik Ephex’ came from a pharmaceutics textbook which sat permanently on my desk when I was employed as a pharmacy technician on leaving school.

How would you describe your music?

We describe our music as melodic punk … as we would the majority of early punk which inspired us to form a band in 1979. The UK Subs were the biggest influence on my early songwriting, I thought they wrote perfect punk songs.

You have your own label where you released your first 7", is it still active? Any other cool releases on that label?

The label is no longer active, but it could easily be resurrected if we chose to. I still have the original artwork for the label. Don’t think I would produce vinyl again tho, it’s too big an outlay for a band who just play a gig every once and a while when they feel like it. We released the Toxik Ephex/Oi Polloi split album ‘Mad as Fuck’ on Green Vomit as well as an EP by Distorted Truth entitled ‘Victim of the Law’ The Adventures of Nobby Porthole was a joint venture between Green Vomit and One Up Records.



Do you have much problem with EDL/SDL in Aberdeen?

We have a National Front which formed a couple of years ago and has stood for local as well as Scottish parliamentary elections….. they have not done particularly well. They have only very recently had an application refused for a march in Aberdeen …. scheduled for 20th April – Adolf Hitler’s birthday. I don’t have a lot of good to say about our local council, but I applaud them for seeing sense and stopping the application in it’s tracks.

And so to answer the question directly, we have a potential problem which needs keeping a close eye on, but the NF have not really achieved anything of note in Aberdeen.

How active are you nowadays? How much do you play live, and is there any upcoming releases?

We do about two or three gigs a year. It’s difficult to do any more than that. I am a self employed musician and have gigs almost every weekend with a ceilidh band (Iron Broo), so it’s difficult to squeeze in Toxik gigs. We have some new songs, but it’s a struggle getting everyone together to rehearse and record them. Runnin Feart Records are looking to release them on vinyl, but I suspect Runnin Feart will be ‘Runnin out of patience’ if we don’t get our finger out.

Filthy Charity live in Sweden 2010

and we had a blast out on the Swedish roads. 2 gigs in Stockholm, 1 in Göteborg and 1 in Malmö. I can really recommend you to to see them live if you get the opportunity. Really nice lads.
